Older Victim Services Program Support
The OVS Program Support Volunteer provides emotional support to older adults who have experienced some form of criminal victimization as well as providing information and assistance when required.
Duties/Responsibilities
- To become aware of services available to victims of crime.
- To assist the victim in assessing services.
- To be knowledgeable of crime prevention measures and to share this information with clients.
- To contact crime victims by mail and/or telephone.
- To assess the needs of victims and provide support as needed.
- To assist the victim in learning about the criminal justice system.
- To complete contact records and case notes for each client.
- To attend scheduled volunteer meetings.
- To inform the Manager, Community Services of needs and interest for the purpose of ongoing education and training sessions.
- To direct clients to appropriate resources through ongoing consultation with the Manager (clients with special needs are then referred to the Manager for follow-up).
Qualifications
- A willingness to help older victims of crime.
- An open mind and a willingness to learn.
- Good interpersonal communication and listening skills.
- A working knowledge of services available to seniors through Age & Opportunity and other agencies.
- Ability to show initiative and commitment.
- Ability to be sensitive to experiences and issues involved with the victimization of older adults.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with respect to client related information (as per all Agency privacy and confidentiality policies).
- Subject to Winnipeg Police Services Criminal Records search.
Training
- Orientation to agency programs, policies, and procedures.
- Ongoing training/workshops for volunteers.
